| Abstract | Radar plays a powerful role in geological applications because viewing geometries can be optimized for distinct terrain types in a mode similar to photogeological analysis based on low sun-angle photography. In addition, physical information regarding terrain conditions such as surface roughness, dielectric properties, subsurface discontinuities and topographic features can be also addressed. For tropical environments, the impact of high resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) with distinct frequencies, polarizations and viewing geometries must be evaluated in order to allow the information to be fully extracted by the geoscientist. This papers outlines the main characteristic and scientific aspects of two long-term investigations in the Brazilian Tropics: the SAREX'92 (South American Radar Experiment) in the Carajás Mineral Province, Amazon Region, and the AIRSAR experiment in the Curaçá Valley, a semiarid site, located in the Northeast of Brazil. The paper also presents a brief review of radar characteristics focussing on vegetation and geological applications. |
